  • AnnMarie Dryden

The wonders of the human body, mind and spirit never cease to amaze me. Given an opportunity, there will always be movement towards wellness, the best that can be achieved if we provide the environment and tools to do so. The natural world is one of our greatest assets to move toward wholeness. The maxim “Not instead of, but In addition to…” from my Interfaith Seminars informs my approach to healing. Science has also given us gifts and I utilize as many of the tools available to us, as we can together, to meet our healing goals on our journey towards wellness.

Throughout my thirty years in Nursing and Medicine, I have been devoted to studying, engaging and working with integrative approaches to wellness. I have endeavored to remain open to possibilities for healing through apprenticeships in folk herbal therapies and studying Herbal Therapeutics, participating in spiritual and ancestral work, obtaining teaching certification in yoga (YTT200, Sivananda, Madurai) and becoming an ordained Interfaith Minister in the state of NY. Practicing Transpersonal Astrology, and Women’s Wellness through Dance/Belly Dancing (teaching privately and at conferences) allows connection and healing to occur outside the clinical setting. I continue to learn every day, every year. Most recently I have been growing my writing practice intending to develop a healing dialogue with others through this medium. Sharing my work in facilitated groups is the latest milestone met and I hope to be expanding to a wider audience this next year.

She has been an Adjunct Professor at North Shore Community College, The Tufts University School of Medicine, The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, and Pacific Rim College in British Columbia. She lectures in Canada, Europe, and the States (so far). Home is feeling comfy; the gardens are beautiful.

This blend of teachers created a truly American-mongrel-Practitioner. A little Ayurveda, some Chinese, lots of Aromatherapy, Native American, with some science and a heavy dose of Folk. Throw in years of studying supplements, their quality, best combinations, and time of day to consume. Add to that twenty years of attending births as a labor coach and herbalist, as well as raising four kids of her own, who have all grown into wonderful adults.

"We teach through the filter of our experience," states Margi, and what a varied and powerful experience these teachers and clients have built into her filter!

Margi’s book, The Practicing Herbalist, 4th edition will be available for purchase in class, or you can order directly from her at earthsongherbals.com. This edition is still at the printer; the price is not yet firm, but likely about $200.

  • Julie Hundley

I began my journey with the sacred plant cannabis after an injury in 2013 that left me with chronic pain. I sought help from Dr. Dustin Sulak D.O., an integrative medical physician and cannabis expert. I took several classes with him and found great relief in coping with my chronic pain issues. I found the medicine quite expensive. As I searched for Cannabis to make my own medicine, I found that the Cannabis I wanted was difficult to find; most Cannabis was of the high THC type, not containing CBD at all. I decided to grow my own. I continued to study by attending various classes in the state of Maine, attended the Cannabis Convention in Acada, CA hosted by Jane Bothwell in 2017, and the conference in Montpelier, VT hosted by Rosemary Gladstar in 2018. I have taken numerous classes from Tammi Sweet, Jody Noe and many others over the years.

As I became a successful grower, I became a Cannabis caregiver licensed by the state of Maine to grow and sell my own medicine.

I have since given up my caregiver license to teach others to make their own Cannabis medicine. I continue however to share my own homegrown medicine to many in need a no cost.

I have taught in Public Schools for over 25 years and hold 2 Masters degrees in education.

I am a retired teacher, biodynamic gardener, herbalist, forager and beekeeper. My healing garden, Sunnyknoll, is a place I welcome others, some from WWOOF, to come, explore, learn and heal. I view this property as a sacred place: private and quiet, surrounded by woodlands and waterways, where the plants and other relatives in the natural world are the teachers. They are honored in how we grow, nurture, harvest and give thanks for. My most influential person teacher and friend is Deb Soule of Avena Botanicals.

    Traditional Medicine

Dr. Noé practices traditional medicine as taught by her Cherokee elders. This is a practice that encompasses mind, body, and spirit. She was accepted as an official apprentice in 1987 by Crosslin F. Smith, high medicine priest of the Keetoowah, of the western band of Cherokees in Tahlequah, OK. She has been with the Smith's since this time that has spanned over 30 decades, and continues to practice and study under Crosslin up to this date.

Prior to this she was taught by the elders of the eastern Cherokees, Goingback and Mary U. Chiltoskey, "Mama" Geneva Jackson, and incidentally with Amy Walker. Dr. Noé continues to study with her elders and practices traditional ways with patients when appropriate.

The traditional medicine way uses plants, earth, air, water, and fire (heat) along with rituals and prayers to invoke Spirit and Healing. The Keetoowah are traditionalists and practice ancient rituals such as the sacred "Stomp Dance" to this day. In traditional medicine many aspects of healing are addressed with the focus on the Spirit of each modality affecting the Spirit of the patient to conjoin with the Great Spirit of the universe.

Each modality is looked upon as an independent people, for example the traditional native american names acknowledge 'plant people', 'rock people', etc. This traditional way honors not only the medicine that is used to affect the physical being of people, but the Spirit that is in each and every living thing, that effects us all concurrently.

  • Lyani Powers, CLC

Lyani has studied clinical herbalism and ethnobotany since she was a child. Starting under the skirts of both grandmothers by watching how they farmed and used plants to create remedies. Lyani grew up listening to her elders speak of what plant works for what ailment and how to treat and soothe others' aches and pains. When Lyani was diagnosed with MS, she was motivated to learn more about additional avenues of healing for herself and others. Through her personal journey to health, Lyani met inspiring and remarkably intelligent healers including nutritionists, naturopaths, and medical physicians. What she learned was invaluable, so much so, she wanted to learn even more.

Lyani dove headfirst into numerous courses, curriculums, and apprenticeships. She completed her studies in Clinical Herbalism, where she studied under Arbor Vitae School in New York founder, Richard Mandelbaum. After that program, she completed the Rosemary Gladstar Herbal Education Program. She went on to complete additional certifications in Pregnancy, Postpartum and Nutrition through Glow Maven and Divine Birth Wisdom. Her Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula Certification is from The Newborn Collective. She is also a CLC, Certified Lactation Consultant. The process of learning never stops for Lyani as she continues to explore the endless depths of wellness through nutrition and holistic care.

After the birth of her first child, Lyani realized she has a passion for supporting birthing people and their babies. When Lyani was pregnant, she had to learn how to support herself holistically but finding quality products and services were difficult to say the least. "There are so many ways to support people during pregnancy, postpartum, motherhood in general, and menopause but many women simply do not know or do not have access to these practices.” Lyani made it her mission to help bridge that gap. She believes no parent should be sitting home in discomfort when there are simple, safe, holistic solutions. The more Lyani studied, the more she discovered the need for women to help, support, and campaign for other women.

“I have always loved plants. I remember from a very young age my mother dividing daylilies in the front yard in her nightgown. My grandfather always had a large vegetable garden daring us to try the hottest peppers. During my teens, I worked at a garden center where I learned how to be in awe of plants, how to grow them, and how to care for them. At UNH, I studied Environmental Conservation and Horticulture. But the real magic began when a college feminist spirituality class lead me to the doorstep of Misty Meadows. My years at MM as an herbal student were spent learning the depth, heart, and medicine of the plants - changing my life profoundly. Along the way, I became a licensed practical nurse, mother to three wild boys, and co-owner of Spirit Wise Herbs. I am currently part of the teaching team for the Level 1 Herbal Studies Program, Herbal Immersion Course, and The Witch's Path Series at Misty Meadows.”

  • Linn Stillwell

My lifelong herbal journey began as I spent my grade school years in Louisiana enthralled by the idea of fairies and combining camellia and rose petals into a most delightful mush that made interesting beads and fairy adornment. I learned about art and pressing flowers from my grandmother and the plants simply kidnapped me permanently. By the 1970’s I was attending lectures and workshops in southern California on supplements and herbal medicines using every resource I could lay my hands on. Moving to New Hampshire opened up a whole new world of herbal knowledge for me from teachers like Rosemary Gladstar, Matthew Wood, Margi Flint, Tierona Klar Lowdog, Cascade Anderson Geller, and other very special teachers along with so many herbal students I met who shared wonderful stories about healing.

The science of essential plant components always fascinated me and I wanted to know why they worked and what the underlying molecular support that opened up the body to healing really was. That pathway led me from my early aromatherapy investigation with Jeanne Rose to a deeper understanding of aromatic molecules from the same plants I studied from an herbalist’s viewpoint and so many more. I honor my teachers Gabriel Mojay, Rhiannon Harris, Peter Holmes, Robert Tisserand, Sylla Sheppard-Hanger, Andrea Butje, and Jade Shutes who have each been outstanding and amazing individuals to learn from. Peter calls essential oils nature’s jewels. I can see that the remarkable healing effects on the body, mind and soul are a remarkable gift, a jewel, we have been given by these plants. I am working to understand what they offer as completely as I am humanly able to and that is why it is always understood that this knowledge comes from a lifelong journey we begin together.

I am also a wildlife artist and am exhibiting in several galleries in New Hampshire. Somehow all the plants, mushrooms, butterflies, dragonflies, foxes, predators and songbirds just roll together to make an almost visible aromatic, harmonizing, soul satisfying energy that simply kidnaps and delivers you to the fairies. Join me in this journey as we all follow the plants.
